Crowdfunded nanosatellites unleashed in orbit

Crowdfunded nanosatellites unleashed in orbit

Alan Boyle, Science Editor NBC News – Nov. 19, 2013 – Two tiny satellites supported by Kickstarter campaigns were kicked out into orbit from the International Space Station on Tuesday, beginning what’s expected to be a months-long citizen science mission. NanoSatisfi’s ArduSat 1 and ArduSat X nanosatellites were deployed by a Japanese-built, spring-loaded launcher attached to the space station. A Vietnamese-built nanosat called PicoDragon was sent out as well. All three satellites were built to CubeSat specifications, 4 inches (10…

What Obama’s Vision of OFA Means for CrowdFunding

What Obama’s Vision of OFA Means for CrowdFunding

BY Rodrigo Davies As the field of civic crowdfunding emerges and grows, it is spawning many competing visions of what the field is and where its appeal comes from. Lately I’ve been thinking about questions such as: How much is crowdfunding about community and shared values? How much is it about physical places? How much is it about a desire to participate and feel agency, and how much is it about ownership? It’s unlikely to be just one of the above,…

A new plea from professors: Buy my idea

A new plea from professors: Buy my idea

Shawn Graham is used to pleading the case for his work. A professor in the history department at Carleton University, he spends ample time competing for research grants, filling out forms and relying on rhetorical skills he honed as a grad student. But for his latest project – setting up research fellowships in digital research for his students – he is bypassing the usual expert panels that hold the purse strings and taking his pitch directly to the public via…

Scientists Compile ‘Census Of The Galaxies’ Using Power Of The Crowd

Scientists Compile ‘Census Of The Galaxies’ Using Power Of The Crowd

Astronomers have sought the aid of enthusiastic amateurs to help them take on the Herculean task of studying the cosmos. Cutting-edge instruments allow us to peer deep into time and space. But back on Earth, there are still just 24 hours in a day. That’s the conundrum researchers have increasingly faced in recent years, as the quantity of images returned by telescopes has outpaced attempts at organizing them. Now, an international group of scientists is tackling that problem by harnessing…

Georgia Tech Launches Its Own Crowdfunding Site For Science Research

By launching a fundraising site specifically for its researchers, Georgia Tech adds a review process and lab fees to the crowdfunding process. Allison Jo Mercer, a researcher at Georgia Tech, is developing an adhesive based on a brilliantly sticky fish. Her work could some day translate into Band-Aids that don’t pull your hair out when you rip them off, safer bandages for serious wounds, or just a better way to stick your GPS unit to your car window. But when…

Scientists discover ‘crowdfunding’ as a way of replacing research grants

Scientists discover ‘crowdfunding’ as a way of replacing research grants

Traditional scientific funding proposals typically do not ask donors to “crowdfund my meth lab, yo,” but then young scientist Ethan Perlstein isn’t taking the traditional route to underwrite his research. Like an increasing number of scientists who have seen public grants and investments shrivel, Mr. Perlstein has broken away from traditional sources of scientific funding and turned to the Web, social media and “crowdfunding” to raise money for his efforts. “Government grant funding system is pretty bleak” outside of the…
